Meccano Ltd. made extensive use of display models to promote sales of the product. These models were designed and built in the model room at the Binns Road factory in Liverpool and made available to dealers at little more than the cost of parts.
One of these was the road locomotive shown here on the cover of the Meccano Magazine for January 1968. This model was very popular at the time, although it is not a very accurate reproduction of its prototype.
Originally, the model was intended to be a reconstruction of the dealer's model, but as construction progressed a number of unsatisfactory design elements were modified.
These include, an modified canopy, wheels (front and back) of dished construction, sporting extra spokes, springing of the front axle beam, a redesigned, detailed dynamo and an improved flywheel adapted to provide a belt drive the dynamo.
Building instructions were published in the November and December 1969 issues of Meccano Magazine. The four articles that Bert Love contributed to MM in 1978, under the nomme de plume of Colin Hamilton, provided ideas for some of the additional details.
