This clock has something of a chequered history. As you can see from the pictures, it is weight driven and the escapement is of the folio verge type.
The late Keith Cameron MD described a foliot verge mechanism that was published as GMM Leaflet 53 in April 1975. Whilst it captured the lines of a wall clock of the type, it contained a technical error in that the verge wheel had an even number of teeth. In the normal course, such a clock would not run, as the nibs on the staff would both be in engagement at the same time. Keith's solution was to offset the journals of the staff from the centre line. This simulated the effect of an odd number of teeth on the verge wheel.
However, the MM for April 1972 had already carried a foliot verge design by Pat Briggs in which he included a verge wheel with an odd number of teeth. Powered by a clockwork motor, it demonstrated the features of this escapement nicely and makes a nice mantel clock.
The June 2005 issue of Constructor Quarterly, carried an essay by Michael Denny entitled "Gentlemen, Time Please". The pictures illustrating the article included a version of the Cameron clock adapted for table display. In the course of his article, Michael admitted that he had not had any success with Pat's verge wheel.
I ran this up over a weekend to see whether it was possible to incorporate Pat's escapement. I intended to keep as close to Michael's redesign, however I was soon forced to depart from that intent. The clock is a 'quicky' and shows it, although it did do duty at several shows and the MMCI exhibition. The short running time resulted in its early demise.
